(Baonghean.vn) - On August 24, US Vice President Mike Pence pledged that the country would not allow “Venezuela to collapse,” emphasizing that this move would “endanger” countries in the wider region.

“The collapse of Venezuela would endanger all who call the Western Hemisphere home,” Pence said in a speech to about 600 people at a Catholic church in Doral, home to Miami’s Venezuelan community. “We cannot and will not allow this to happen.”

The US Vice President said that "by coordinating with US allies in the Latin American region, the US will confront and overcome all those who dare to threaten our prosperity".

The US leader stressed that the “collapse” of Venezuela would “lead to a surge in drug trafficking with deadly consequences”, a view also promoted by President Donald Trump.

Also in his speech, Mr. Pence did not raise the idea of ​​military action as President Trump had mentioned. Mr. Pence affirmed that the US will not make decisions unilaterally. According to him, the slogan America First does not mean that the US acts alone.

The US Vice President's remarks came just days after he concluded a visit to Colombia, Argentina, Chile and Panama last week. Venezuela was among the main issues discussed during the visit.
