In a statement on the website, Republican congressmen Adam Kinzinger, Abigail Spanberger and Vice Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Michael McCall introduced a bill to impose sanctions on the Turkish government for purchasing the S-400 missile defense system from the Russian Federation.
The bill is called the "Opposition to Russian Arms Exports Act" and calls for Türkiye's purchase of Russian weapons to be recognized as a "significant transaction" under the current Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), which requires sanctions.
The text of the bill has not yet been entered into the US Congressional database.
The delivery to Türkiye of the latest Russian-made S-400 air defense systems has sparked a crisis in relations between Türkiye and the United States since mid-July 2019. Washington demanded that Ankara abandon the deal with Russia in exchange for purchasing US Patriot systems, while threatening to delay or even cancel the sale of the latest F-35 fighter jets to Türkiye, as well as impose sanctions under CAATSA.
Ankara refused to give in andtcontinue negotiations with Russia on additional S-400 weapons. So far, the Trump administration has not made good on its threat to impose sanctions on Türkiye.
