A letter dated December 5, 2012, from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, USA, shows that the laboratory rejected two switches manufactured by H3C Technologies, a technology company based in Hangzhou, China, Tech News Daily reported.
Initially, H3C was a joint venture between Huawei and 3Com, an American company. The joint venture's old name was Huawei-3Com. Hewlett Packard acquired Huawei-3Com in 2010.
A spokesperson for Los Alamos National Laboratory said that the National Atomic Security Administration (NSA) of the U.S. Department of Energy had requested that they replace components manufactured by the Chinese company to ensure security.
The incident at Los Alamos National Laboratory has raised questions about the procurement practices of U.S. national security agencies. The White House and Congress have expressed concerns about Huawei's close ties to the Chinese military and government. Huawei, the world's second-largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer, maintains that its products pose no security threat and denies any influence of the Chinese military on its business.
The Los Alamos National Laboratory is where the first atomic bomb in human history was created. Today, this research facility is responsible for maintaining the U.S. nuclear arsenal. It is unknown how many Chinese-made switches the Los Alamos National Laboratory is currently using, or when they were purchased.
Last October, the US House Intelligence Committee released an investigative report on components from Huawei and ZTE, two major Chinese telecommunications companies. The report recommended that the US government not use equipment from Huawei and ZTE because they "may serve foreign purposes" and "may pose a security threat to the United States."
