The US Air Force said an unarmed Minuteman III missile was launched from a missile silo at Vandenberg Air Force Base at 2:02 p.m. Hanoi time. The missile carried a dummy warhead and hit a target on Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific Ocean after flying about 6,700 kilometers.
The nuclear missile test took 10 months to plan. Another Minuteman III missile was launched from the same base exactly a week ago. These launches test the accuracy and reliability of the intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) weapon system, providing reliable data to ensure safe and effective nuclear deterrence.
The ICBM test program demonstrates the operational capability of the Minuteman III, ensuring the United States' ability to maintain a strong, credible nuclear deterrent as a core element of U.S. national security and the security of U.S. allies and partners.
The US currently has about 450 of these missiles and tests them regularly. However, recent tests come amid heightened tensions with North Korea, which has recently tested nuclear missiles, including missiles designed to strike US territory./.
