The report stated that investigators examined two separate cyberattacks targeting government employee data repositories at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Washington believes both were carried out by China.

According to reports, the attack affected approximately 750,000 U.S. defense personnel, including numerous files on Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employees.

These data repositories contain personal information of many defense employees and officials, including: financial statements, investments, family data, contacts with foreigners, and the names of friends and neighbors of U.S. government employees.

"This data is highly sensitive and relevant to many aspects," an unnamed U.S. official told AFP.

“The open question is whether they are targeting the CIA… This would be a big problem. They could reveal the identities of CIA personnel,” another official said.

Over the weekend, the US government also admitted that data on at least 4 million current and former federal government employees had been stolen.

Earlier this week, a career association in the U.S. said that Chinese hackers are in possession of sensitive information on all federal employees.
