The report said investigators looked into two separate cyberattacks targeting a government employee database at the Office of Personnel Management, both of which Washington said were carried out by China.
The attack reportedly affected about 750,000 US defense personnel, including many files on Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employees.
The databases contained personal information on many defense employees and officials, including: financial statements, investments, family data, contacts with foreigners, and names of friends and neighbors of U.S. government employees.
“The data is very sensitive and involves many aspects,” an unnamed US official told AFP.
“The open question is whether they are targeting the CIA … That would be a big problem. They could expose the identities of CIA officers,” another official said.
Over the weekend, the US government also admitted that a database of information belonging to at least 4 million current and former federal employees had been stolen.
Earlier this week, a US career association said Chinese hackers were in possession of sensitive information on all federal employees.
