(Baonghean.vn) - On May 27, US President Donald Trump announced that he could sign an agreement with Iran on its nuclear program, and believed that economic sanctions imposed on the Islamic republic would limit activities that Washington said were behind a series of attacks in the Middle East.

Speaking at a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo, President Trump stated: "I really believe Iran wants to make a deal, and I think they're very smart. I think it could happen. This is an opportunity to be a great country with the same leadership. We're not looking for regime change - I want to be very clear. We're not looking for nuclear weapons."

During his four-day visit to Japan, President Trump also welcomed Prime Minister Abe's help in dealing with Iran after NHK reported that the Japanese leader was considering visiting Tehran in mid-June. Iran said the visit could not be made in the near future. President Trump emphasized: "I know for a fact that Prime Minister (Abe) is very close to the Iranian leadership and we will see what happens."

For his part, Prime Minister Abe declared that Japan will do what it can on the Iran issue. Prime Minister Abe said: "Peace and stability in the Middle East are extremely important not only for Japan and the United States but also for the entire international community."

Tensions have been high between Iran and the US following an attack this month on oil tankers in the Gulf region. Washington has blamed Iran for the attack – something Tehran has denied.
