A Russian military police convoy entered Manbij at the request of Kurdish militia to support the group in the face of threats from Türkiye. Images released by Russian media showed several Tigr armored vehicles and military trucks with Russian flags, MP (military police) painted on them and flashing lights patrolling along the streets of Manbij.
Manbij is a strategic city on Syria’s northeastern border with Türkiye. The area has been controlled by the Kurdish militia of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) for years. However, after US President Donald Trump announced that he would withdraw all 2,000 troops from Syria, the Kurds asked Russia and the Syrian government to send troops there to help them counter the threat from Türkiye.
The SDF has been the US’s main partner in the fight against IS, but Türkiye sees the Kurdish militia as a threat and is determined to wipe them out. Türkiye is amassing troops and equipment along Syria’s northern border, ready to take over if the US withdraws its forces from the area.
