Prosecutors accused the man of carrying out the attack in the name of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.
“Just 24 hours after the attack, we charged Saipov with the following crimes: providing material support to terrorism, committing acts of violence and destroying motor vehicles without regard to the safety of people, resulting in multiple casualties...” - acting federal prosecutor in New York Joon Kim said.
Law enforcement officials seized two cell phones from the pickup truck Saipov drove during the attack, one of which contained about 90 videos that appeared to be ISIS propaganda. The suspect also left a note in the vehicle pledging allegiance to ISIS written in English.
According to US law enforcement officials, Saipov may have been in contact with two other people.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has just announced that it is seeking information about a second Uzbek man involved in this daring attack. According to the FBI, the agency is seeking information about a man named Mukhammadzoir Kadirov, 32 years old./.
