According to RIA Novosti on June 24, a representative of the US Department of Defense said that the Pentagon was aware of the Ukrainian Armed Forces shelling Sevastopol with US ATACMS missiles. But they had no comment on this.
The attack on Sevastopol occurred on June 23 at 12:15 (Moscow time). According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Ukraine attacked the city of Sevastopol with 5 ATACMS missiles provided by the US. 4 missiles were shot down by the air defense system while the warhead of the 5th missile exploded in mid-air.
According to the latest Russian figures, four people were killed in the terrorist attack, including two children. Another 151 people were injured, of whom 82 were hospitalized, including 55 adults and 27 children.
June 24 was declared a day of national mourning in Sevastopol and the Crimean Peninsula.
The Russian Defense Ministry has demanded that the United States, together with the Ukrainian government, bear responsibility for the deliberate attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the city of Sevastopol. The ministry claims that American experts established the flight coordinates of the ATACMS missiles based on information from American spy satellites, which means that Washington bears direct responsibility.
"The responsibility for the targeted missile attack on civilians in Sevastopol lies first of all with the United States, which supplied these weapons to Ukraine, and Kiev, as the attack was carried out from its territory," the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
According to the Flightradar portal, during the attack of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Sevastopol, an American RQ-4B Global Hawk reconnaissance drone circled over the Black Sea.
Sevastopol - a port city and naval base on the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014 - is frequently attacked, but the number of casualties in the June 23 incident was quite high.
