US backs India to become new leading power

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the US is ready to provide the best military technology to India in modernizing its military.

The US is ready to provide India with military technology to modernize its weapons.

"The United States supports India's emergence as a leading new power and will continue to contribute to India's ability to provide security in the region," Tillerson said at a press conference following talks with his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj in New Delhi.

"In this regard, we are ready and able to provide India with the best technologies within the framework of weapons modernization, including the ambitious proposal of the US industry for two types of aircraft F-16 and F-18,"

For his part, Foreign Minister Svaraj said that the sides "agreed to encourage cooperation between defense enterprises".

Additionally, Tillerson and Swaraj discussed several other issues on the bilateral agenda and identified “steps to develop cooperation.”

The Indian minister also raised the issue of reforming work visas for highly skilled professionals, which could affect Indian citizens.
