The United States and Germany won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

According to results just announced in Stockholm (Sweden), three scientists from the United States and Germany have become the recipients of the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has just announced that three scientists – Eric Betzig (Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Germany), Stefan W. Hell (Max Planck Institute, Goettingen, Germany), and William E. Moerner (Stanford University, California, USA) – have been awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

The work that earned the three scientists this prestigious award was the creation of a super-resolution fluorescence microscope.

Eric Betzig, a U.S. citizen (born in 1960) in Ann Arbor, USA. Stefan W. Hell, a German citizen (born in 1962) in Arad, Romania. And William E. Moerner, a U.S. citizen (born in 1953) in Pleasanton, USA.

"It was a surprise. Before that, I thought our research on microscopy wouldn't win the prize," Stefan W. Hell said by phone.

The 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry includes a gold medal, a certificate of merit, and a cash prize of 8 million Swedish kronor (equivalent to 1.2 million USD). The award will be presented to the three scientists mentioned above on December 10th.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry is the third prize to be announced this year. Prior to this, the winners of the Nobel Prizes in Medicine and Physics were announced on October 6th and 7th, respectively.

Also in Stockholm on October 9th, the Nobel Committee will announce the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, and on October 13th – the Nobel Prize in Economics. Meanwhile, the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on October 10th in Oslo, Norway.
