According to Kyodo news agency, in reality, there is no military exercise taking place. The eight-day joint exercise is all described on a computer system. The US and Japanese militaries, with the help of computer programs, will test their combat coordination in response to simulated attacks by the Marine Corps to conduct subversive activities, cyber attacks, and electromagnetic wave operations.
Also participating in the exercise are units at Japan's Kengun military base in Kumamoto city and the U.S. Navy's Camp Courtney base in Uruma on Okinawa island.
The Yama Sakura exercise between the US and Japan has been held annually since 1982. It mobilizes soldiers from various military fields, including reconnaissance, medical and logistics.
This exercise has Australia and Canada participating as observers.
