The Switchblade is a 5.1-meter-long, three-wheeled, two-seater vehicle. As a sports car, the Switchblade is equipped with two side wings and a retractable tail when moving on the ground. However, unlike vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) vehicles, the Switchblade cannot take off from the road and must gain momentum from airports.
“You can drive the Switchblade to any airport to take off and can land at the same public airport or any other airport. You can also take off and land from any airport you have privileges at,” said a Samson spokesperson.
The Switchblade is powered by a 1.6-litre V4 engine with 190bhp allowing it to travel 725km from its 113-litre fuel tank.
"We have completed the vehicle options using hybrid (mixed) and electric systems," added a Samson spokesman.
The car is also equipped with safety features for passengers such as a reversing camera, safety parachute... There are three versions of the car: Snowbird for cold climates, Trek designed for stable landings and Aurora is a combination of Snowbird-Trek.
Samson has a lot of competitors today such as aerospace giant Airbus with a project to bring self-driving taxis to the sky by 2020; Kitty Hawk - a company co-founded by Google, Larry Page and Uber is working with strategic partners to create its own flying taxis.
