Southern region welcomes Tet in coldest temperature in 17 years

February 9, 2016 14:40

With temperatures of around 14 degrees Celsius in Long Khanh (Dong Nai), this is the coldest Tet holiday in the South in the past 17 years since 1999.

According to meteorological expert, Master Le Thi Xuan Lan (former Deputy Head of the Forecast Department of the Southern Hydrometeorological Station), on the morning of February 8 (the first day of Tet), the temperature in both the Eastern and Western regions of the South continued to drop by 2-4 degrees Celsius compared to the previous day. The reason was that the cold air after affecting the Northern provinces spread to the South.

If compared in the data series, this is the coldest period during Tet since December 1999 until now. Long Khanh is the place with the lowest recorded temperature, about 14 degrees Celsius (down nearly 4 degrees compared to the previous day). Other areas with low temperatures are: Phuoc Long over 16 degrees Celsius, Dong Xoai 16 degrees Celsius, Bien Hoa 16 degrees Celsius, Tay Ninh 16 degrees Celsius, Nha Be (HCMC) is 18 degrees Celsius.

The temperature in the West region is less cold and warmer than the East region, but the temperature is still above or below 20 degrees Celsius. In particular, Chau Doc (An Giang) has the lowest temperature of more than 17 degrees Celsius, the reason may be because this area has a relatively high terrain because it is close to the Seven Mountains region.

According to Ms. Lan, in addition to the cold air, the Southern provinces generally have quite a lot of fog that lasts for a long time, and it still remains until noon. The cold weather will last until the 2nd and 3rd day of Tet, then gradually warm up.
