Nam Dan: 350 households produce cassava with high profits
(Baonghean.vn) -To meet market demand, currently, in addition to growing and propagating cassava, most households in Nam Dan district process starch at home.
Currently, in Nam Dan area, there are about 350 households producing cassava starch to serve market demand. In order to provide cassava roots for people, the district has expanded the area to 50 hectares, concentrated in communes along Dai Hue mountain slopes such as: Nam Anh, Nam Thanh, Nam Xuan, Xuan Hoa.
Having been involved in the cassava starch processing business for more than ten years, thanks to the experience gained, the cassava starch of Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Ha's family in Hamlet 1, Xuan Hoa Commune has now become famous throughout the province. On average, each crop produces about 2 - 2.5 tons of starch, with a selling price of 100 - 120 thousand VND/kg, her family earns 200 million VND in net profit.

According to people, cassava is a traditional crop with many advantages: easy to grow, requires little care, is free of pests and diseases, has high productivity, low investment costs, self-propagates for adjacent crops, is suitable for all types of land, and has good drought tolerance, especially on high hillsides.
Because cassava has a seasonal crop, households usually start planting in the first lunar month, then harvest at the end of the year and then purchase and process until April of the following year. On average, each hectare yields over 12 tons of tubers, and one ton of cassava tubers can be processed into 1.5 - 1.7 quintals of cassava starch. With the current selling price of 120,000 - 130,000 VND/kg, 1 hectare of cassava can bring in nearly 200 million VND, many times higher than other crops on the same area.
Mr. Nguyen Thuc Quang - Vice Chairman of Nam Anh Commune People's Committee - Nam Dan added: "Nam Anh is a unit with a relatively large area of cassava cultivation, especially focusing on processing cassava starch. Currently, the commune has 20 hectares of cassava for starch processing, in addition, people also buy from districts such as Tan Ky, Thanh Hoa for processing. With 150 households specializing in cassava starch production and processing, in the coming time, we hope that the sectors and levels will continue to create conditions for Nam Anh to build a cassava starch brand to increase people's income.
