On February 11, the leaders of the University of Economics and Industrial Technology where Hoang Duc Hai is studying said that the school's Board of Directors agreed to award an honorary diploma to the male student.
“This is the first time the school has decided to award an honorary diploma to a student who unfortunately passed away before graduating,” said Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Khuong, Vice Principal of the University of Economics and Industrial Technology.

According to Mr. Khuong, Hoang Duc Hai is a final year student majoring in electricity with good academic performance, sociable, and loved by teachers and friends.
Previously, on February 10, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc decided to posthumously award the Prime Minister's Certificate of Merit to Hoang Duc Hai in Hai Ninh commune (Tinh Gia, Thanh Hoa) for his brave act of selflessly saving people. Sharing the pain with the family, the Prime Minister also sent 20 million VND to support the family.

At around 12:30 on February 8, Ms. Le Thi Loan (teacher at Hai Chau Secondary School) and her two children went to Ghep River to release carp to see off the Kitchen God. All three of them later had an accident and drowned.Seeing someone struggling, Hoang Duc Hai jumped into the river to help. After bringing Loan and her three children to shore, Hai was exhausted from the cold and was swept away. More than 3 hours later, the rescue team found Hai's body at the bottom of the river, about 20 meters from the shore.
