Young man kidnaps boy, barricades himself in Saigon

On the morning of September 5, Nguyen Van Thua (34 years old, from Can Tho) went to the opposite rented room on Street 7, Binh Hung Hoa Ward (Binh Tan District, Ho Chi Minh City) and took the two-year-old boy to his room. He closed the door and barricaded himself with a 5-liter can of gasoline.

The victim's mother panicked and shouted for help. Many people came to persuade Thua to release the boy but failed.

Binh Tan District Police and Fire Police arrived at the scene shortly after, along with Thua's relatives, urging him not to injure the victim. A moment later, he released the hostage but remained locked in place.

After two hours of patient encouragement, the police took Thua outside to talk. He covered his face and sobbed, then collapsed on the table, saying he did it "to get his wife and children back."

Mr. Vo Van Muon (landlord) said that Thua and his wife and their 4-year-old daughter have been living here for half a year. A few days ago, they had an argument and the wife took her child back to her hometown in Hau Giang. Thinking that the woman in the room across the street had influenced her wife and child to leave, Thua was very upset.

"It's alive, gentle, and very focused on business. It must have been immature thinking to act like that," said Mr. Muon.

Police are investigating the incident.
