Improving clean water supply capacity in Cua Lo Town

(Baonghean) - Upgrading the pumping system, upstream water pipelines and investing in developing a new pipeline to get clean water from the water supply system in the vicinity of Vinh City are practical actions of Cua Lo Town Water Supply One Member Co., Ltd. to ensure clean water supply for the people of the coastal town this summer.

Cua Lo Town Water Plant has an operating capacity of more than 3,000 m3/day and with such capacity, it will be difficult to meet the demand for clean water for customers in the area, especially during the beach tourism season. Seeing these difficulties and limitations, in early 2015, Cua Lo Water Supply One Member Co., Ltd. boldly invested nearly 3 billion VND to install an additional 4 km pipeline to take clean water from the water supply system of the Vinh sub-region project, thereby increasing the supply capacity by 1,500 m3/day. Thus, the unit has a total capacity of 4,500 m3/day, enough to meet the demand for clean water of customers.

Mr. Tan Thanh's family in Thu Thuy ward said: "Last year, the water plant provided clean water to the people according to a specific schedule, but because my family runs a restaurant service on the beach, it was very difficult and inconvenient to get clean water for the family. Recently, the clean water from the plant has been provided comfortably, conveniently for the people and the pressure is high, the water flows very strongly."

Currently, the clean water supply pipeline network has covered 7 wards of Cua Lo town, including Nghi Tan, Nghi Thuy, Thu Thuy wards, the pipeline system of level 2, 3, 4 is very developed, so many households have access to clean water. Mr. Vo Hong Trung, Head of Block 2 of Nghi Thuy ward said: "Currently, there are 17 families in the block that do not use clean water, the ward People's Committee has supported 16 million VND to connect the main pipeline, each household invested 3 million VND to connect additional branch pipes to the household to use clean water". Thanks to the benefits of the water supply network development project (Cua Lo town water plant) and the support of the ward, and the contributions of the people, Nghi Thuy currently has nearly 70% of households using clean water. Mr. Vo Van Ly, Chairman of the Ward People's Committee, said: "The ward's goal in the coming time is to have 80% of households using clean water and to achieve that, the ward will continue to support the blocks to develop the main pipeline, while promoting propaganda and mobilizing people to participate in investing in developing the clean water supply pipeline system."

In Nghi Tan and Thu Thuy wards, local authorities and people are very interested in this field, so the rate of clean water use is high. Nghi Tan ward currently has 60% of households using tap water and Thu Thuy has more than 40% of households. Currently, the main pipeline of Cua Lo town water plant has been developed to Nghi Huong, Nghi Thu, Nghi Hai, Nghi Hoa wards, but the water supply network to households has not been expanded, so few households have access to clean water (only 10 - 20% of households use clean water). Mr. Duong Ngoc Hung, Head of Planning Department of Cua Lo town Water Supply One Member Co., Ltd. said: "To increase the rate of people using clean water, the company proposes to relevant levels and sectors to make a plan to support investment in developing the water supply pipeline system, at the same time promoting propaganda and mobilizing people to actively participate in this field".

A current concern in the water supply sector in Cua Lo coastal town is that many hotels and restaurants do not use clean water, but exploit underground water from wells that do not ensure quality. This not only affects water resources (due to deep well drilling, indiscriminate use of water, waste, etc.), but also affects the health of users. Mr. Nguyen Huu Luan - Director of Cua Lo Town Water Supply One Member Co., Ltd. said: "The company has worked with Cua Lo Medical Center and departments and offices in Cua Lo Town about the use of underground water that does not ensure quality, however, this issue has not been checked and handled promptly". Currently, out of a total of more than 3,500 customers using clean water of Cua Lo Town Water Supply One Member Co., Ltd., only 600 customers are hotels and restaurants using tap water.

Mr. Nguyen Ho Dong - Green Hotel maintenance officer said: "This summer, the number of tourists coming to Green Hotel has increased, so the hotel has built 2 underground water tanks with 100m3 of clean water to regularly supply 9 water tanks above to provide clean water for 180 rooms of the hotel. To use clean water effectively, the reception and service department regularly instructs guests to use water economically and at some locations install signs and instructions on how to use water economically". In addition, Muong Thanh Cua Lo, Thai Binh Duong, Saigon - Kim Lien, Golf Course, Loc Chau Apartment... are customers who use clean water in large volumes and have many very effective measures to save clean water.

With the determination to find a sustainable solution to meet the increasing demand for clean water in Cua Lo coastal town, Cua Lo Town Water Supply One Member Co., Ltd. will invest in developing a raw water pipeline connecting to the Lam River water supply system of Tuan Loc Construction Investment Joint Stock Company, and at the same time upgrade the clean water treatment system with a capacity of 6,000m3/day, meeting the needs of customers. The unit also implements a project to renovate and expand Cua Lo Water Plant from 3,000m3 to 13,000m2/day from a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). These solutions will satisfy the demand for clean water in the area and neighboring areas such as Nghi Khanh, Nghi Hop, Nghi Thach, Nghi Xuan and large production projects in Cua Lo, Nam Cam Industrial Park.
