Massive structures on the surface of Mars have baffled NASA experts about their massive size, the Sun reported. Some of the strange structures have walls shaped like thin blades as tall as a 16-story building.
However, they are not alien homes, but more likely formed from lava in the planet's history. NASA describes the structures as "polygonal peaks" and has found them in many areas across the planet's surface.
According to NASA, the simplest explanation for these striking peaks is that lava flowed into pre-existing fractures and then resisted erosion better than the surrounding rock.
"Finding the peaks at Medusae Fossae motivated me to look for all kinds of polygonal peaks on Mars," said Laura Kerber of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "Polygonal peaks can form in a number of ways. Some of them are really key to understanding the history of early Mars. Many are mineral veins, which tell us about water circulating underground."
