Stuart Peach, head of the North Atlantic Alliance's Military Committee, said NATO does not recognize the Russian identity of the Crimean peninsula and called on Moscow to withdraw its troops from the peninsula.

“The Alliance does not and will not agree to Russia's illegal and unjust annexation of Crimea,” said Stuart Peach.

Additionally, Mr. Peach called on Russia to release Ukrainian sailors detained after the incident in the Sea of Azov.

On November 25, 2018, three Ukrainian Navy ships illegally entered Russian territorial waters and were seized.

The Crimean Peninsula is a large peninsula in Europe almost entirely surrounded by water; it lies immediately south of mainland Ukraine and west of the Kuban region of Russia. Administratively, the peninsula was a subject of the Russian Federation during the 2014 Crimean Crisis when Russia annexed the territory from Ukraine.
