What are probiotics, which types are best for children, how long should they be used, what are their applications in treating digestive diseases, and do all probiotics have the same effect? These were some of the questions raised at the Workshop on the Effectiveness of Probiotics on the Nutrition, Immunity, and Digestion of Children, organized by the Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine in August 2015.

Probiotics are live bacteria that are beneficial to the gut. When used in appropriate amounts, they are beneficial to human health (according to the FAO-WHO). Probiotics have long been used in the treatment of many conditions such as: treating diarrhea caused by gastroenteritis, treating and preventing diarrhea caused by antibiotic use, preventing recurrent diarrhea due to Clostridium difficile, and treating abdominal cramps in young children.

Professor Nguyen Gia Khanh (Chairman of the Vietnam Pediatric Association) stated, "Currently, there are many different strains of probiotics, however, not all types are the same. Each strain has its own specific effect, and not all probiotics have the same effect. To conclude on the effectiveness of a probiotic strain, it is necessary to go through actual treatment or clinical trials." In reality, there are many probiotic products on the market today, but not all products meet the standards for selecting probiotic strains. Therefore, before choosing a probiotic, experts also advise consumers to carefully research the probiotic strain to use for the right purpose.

Professor Nguyen Gia Khanh chaired the workshop "The Effectiveness of Probiotics on the Nutritional Status, Immunity, and Digestion of Children."

At this seminar, Dr. Phan Bich Nga (Head of the Nutrition Examination and Counseling Department – National Institute of Nutrition) also presented a scientific report on the effectiveness of Bio-acimin Gold probiotic supplementation on the nutritional status, digestion, and immunity of malnourished children aged 6-23 months. The research results confirmed that the three beneficial bacterial strains (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bacillus subtilis, Streptococus faecalis) along with other components in Bio-acimin Gold have the following effects:

- Reduces symptoms of digestive disorders such as: Diarrhea, bloating, indigestion, constipation...

- Significantly improved appetite in children after 2 weeks.

- Boosts the immune system. Promotes height growth in children.

- Significant improvement in children's weight after 4 weeks of supplementation.

Dr. Phan Bich Nga presented her report at the conference.

Here, experts also questioned the origin and copyright of the probiotic strains used in the Bio-acimin Gold product. From the manufacturer's side, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Dung (Director of Me Linh Pharmaceutical Company) stated, "The three probiotic strains in Bio-acimin Gold are processed and cultured at the microbial bank of the Vietnam Institute of Medicine and Applications. Here, the cultivation and longevity monitoring process is carried out very strictly to ensure the best genetic source. These three strains have also been announced and licensed by the Ministry of Health before we put them into production."

Discussions at the workshop also revealed that the three probiotic strains in Bio-acimin Gold meet the 7S principles for probiotic selection set forth by an international organization, including:

Source:Clearly traceable to human origin and isolated from humans.

Strain:Genetic code identified

Freedom:Sufficient dose, sufficient quantity to achieve the desired effect.

Stability:Stable and unaffected by climate and transportation processes.

Survival:High viability in the digestive tract (this is considered an important factor when choosing probiotics).

Scientific studies:There are clinical studies and actual treatment experiences in humans.

Standards:The microbial strain meets international standards.

At the end of the workshop, the experts unanimously agreed and highly praised Bio-acimin Gold. This is the first probiotic powder product in Vietnam to undergo systematic clinical trials and be recommended for use in young children.

This product is not a medicine and is not intended to replace medical treatment.
