The newspaper quoted former CIA analyst Christopher Johnson as saying that Beijing is pursuing adventurism in the East Sea and the East China Sea because it believes that the US is indecisive in diplomatic matters, such as not punishing Syria for using chemical weapons or Russia for sending troops into Crimea.
“However, Beijing would be mistaken to underestimate Washington’s determination to defend Asia. The United States is a sleeping giant. If China pushes too hard, the United States will deploy its forces.”
