New York restricts cars, gives space to pedestrians
New York – one of the busiest cities in the world has recently implemented a trial of using space originally reserved for cars to reserve for pedestrians and bicycles.
In densely populated Manhattan, peak daytime traffic can reach 4 million people and the ratio of pedestrians to cars can reach 18 to 1. Faced with this reality, city officials conducted a month-long experiment along Broadway.

The street in Manhattan, New York is more shared with pedestrians. |
Specifically, the road surface area used for cars is redistributed and allocated more for pedestrians and cyclists, the speed of cars is limited to only 5 mph. The experiment has brought very positive results, the place that was previously dense with cars now gives space to pedestrians, they can sit comfortably like in the park.
“New York, like other major cities around the world, is facing congestion and with the growing urban population, safer streets are required, and space for cars needs to be reduced to reduce congestion in certain areas,” said Jennifer Brown, project executive director.
In fact, some major cities around the world have made similar moves before, with Paris city officials proposing to double the number of bike lanes and limit some roads to electric vehicles by 2020. In London, Mayor Sadiq Khan wants to stop building new car parks and consider lowering the speed limit for cars.
The program will expand to other areas of New York City, including Lower Manhattan and Jamaica, Queens. Additional streets in Manhattan will also be included.
With this trial, the program aims to reduce traffic congestion, make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists, and create a friendlier community.
