The National Cup will continue with the round of 16 taking place on January 17, 2022. The quarter-finals will be played on February 8, 2022, and the semi-finals and finals will be played from March 15, 2022 to March 18, 2022.

Barca fans demand Griezmann's expulsion

On the morning of August 6, Barcelona time, Griezmann drove a Rolls Royce to Joan Gamper Stadium to practice with his Barca teammates. A group of fans were waiting at the gate, booing Griezmann and chanting in unison: "Messi is gone because of you."

When the fans met Jordi Alba at Barca's headquarters, they also shouted: "Come down here". Griezmann and Alba are said to be the two players who refused to take a pay cut when Barca was in financial crisis. According to Cuatro, Griezmann did not even give Barca a penny.

According to Diario Sport, Griezmann earns around 40 million euros, before tax, per season at Barca. Messi has agreed to a pay cut of 20 million euros after tax, which is roughly the same as Griezmann's. On August 5, Barca told Messi they wanted him to take a further 30% pay cut, but the two sides failed to reach an agreement, according to El Chiringuito.

Based on Barca's financial situation, La Liga stipulates that their wage bill cannot exceed 200 million euros for the 2021-2022 season. If their wage bill exceeds this figure, they must compensate by reducing wages or selling players.

La Liga president Javier Tebas said that if Barca wanted to sign a player with a salary of 40 million euros like Messi, they would need to sell players worth four times as much, or 160 million euros, or reduce other players' salaries by the same ratio. The remaining amount, 120 million euros, would have to be used to pay off debt. Barca's total debt is currently approaching 1.2 billion euros.

By the end of June 2020, Barca's salary fund was 443 million euros. Barca needs to reduce this amount to below 200 million euros for the 2021-2022 season to be allowed to register more players. Not only Messi, Barca still cannot register new players such as Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia or Emerson.

This summer, Barca earned 28.5 million euros from the sales of Junior Firpo, Carles Alena and Jean-Clair Todibo. However, their goal is to push out players with higher salaries in the team, such as Samuel Umtiti, Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele.
