On the afternoon of April 12 (New York time), the United Nations Security Council voted on a draft resolution requesting the Syrian government to cooperate in the investigation into the chemical weapons attack.

However, the draft resolution was not passed because Russia vetoed it. This was the eighth time Russia has used its veto to oppose a draft resolution related to the Syria issue. Besides Russia, Bolivia also voted against it. China, which has voted against the Syria issue six times, abstained this time along with Ethiopia and Kazakhstan. Meanwhile, 10 countries voted in favor. Previously, Russia announced that it would use its veto because, according to them, the content of this draft was "unacceptable."

The draft resolution, proposed by Britain, France and the United States, is slightly revised from the text presented last week in response to the suspected sarin gas attack in Khan Sheikhoun. It condemns the attack and calls on President Bashar al-Assad's government to allow inspectors access to the site and provide the necessary information.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson expressed disappointment at Russia's veto of the draft resolution, saying in a statement in London that the decision put Russia on the "opposing side" of the debate.

Ahead of the vote, the UN Security Council met for nearly three hours that morning to discuss the situation in Syria. However, the meeting turned into a war of words when the US and its Western allies said that President Bashar al-Assad's government was the mastermind of the attack, and accused Russia of covering up for Damascus. Meanwhile, Russia asserted that there was not enough evidence to convict the Damascus government./.
