Among the 64 T-90 tanks Russia plans to deliver to Vietnam in 2017, surprisingly, there is also the T-90K command tank version.
Specifically, according to Interfax-AVN, in 2017, Russia will officially deliver 64 T-90S/K tanks to Vietnam. Surprisingly, among the two T-90 versions that Russia delivered to Vietnam, there is also the T-90K command tank version - the most advanced version that Russia is currently equipped with in quite modest numbers. |
For those who are not familiar with tanks, it is difficult to recognize the difference between the T-90S and T-90K versions. However, the easiest sign is the 2 antennas, one used for the command post (radio R-163-50K) and navigation equipment (TNA-4-3), along with the rear auxiliary fuel tank smaller than other versions. |
In addition, the command version also differs from the first T-90 versions, the vehicle's turret is a cast turret (previous models had welded turrets) and is equipped with a more powerful V-92S2 engine. |
In addition to the above unique features, the T-90K is similar to the T-90MS, T-90A or T-90S versions. This tank is escorted by 3 layers of defense: passive composite armor; explosive reactive armor ERA and the Shtora-1 active defense system. |
Regarding explosive reactive armor (ERA), the T-90K is equipped with the latest generation Kontakt-5 ERA armor covering the front of the hull and turret. This type of armor is rated to be able to withstand RPG anti-tank rounds, anti-tank missiles and APFSDS armor-piercing shells. It is rated to be more than capable of withstanding standard 120mm artillery shells on Western tanks. |
In addition to the ERA armor, the T-90K tank is also protected by the TShU-1-7 Shtora-1 electro-optical countermeasure system designed to disrupt the laser target designation and rangefinders of incoming anti-tank missiles. |
The vehicle is also equipped with 12 fog launchers – which are released when Shtora detects that the tank has been “spotted” by laser aiming devices. The fog can form in less than 3 seconds and lasts for about 20 seconds. The range of the fog is 50-70 meters. This fog will interfere with laser designators as well as camouflage the tank from optical aiming devices. |
The T-90K's active protection capability is further enhanced by the installation of sensors around the turret, which allow alarms when the vehicle is targeted by laser-guided weapons. This is a strong point of Russian tanks that Western main battle tanks do not have. (In the photo: T-90K in action in Syria). |
