Russia needs the West to guarantee security for both Kiev and Moscow in peace deal
Russia's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, said on August 18 that Moscow agrees that any future peace agreement on Ukraine must include security guarantees for Kiev, but Moscow also needs credible security commitments.
On the social network X, Mr. Ulyanov wrote: “Many leaders of European Union (EU) countries emphasize that the future peace agreement must provide reliable security guarantees or commitments for Ukraine. Russia agrees with that point of view. However, Russia has a legitimate right to expect that Moscow will also receive effective security guarantees.”
The West would be making a mistake if it did not start discussions on security guarantees for Moscow, Mr. Ulyanov said. The Russian diplomat stressed that these guarantees should be “much more reliable than empty promises” that NATO would not expand eastward.
Earlier in the day, the Coalition issued a statement affirming its readiness to deploy a multinational “reassurance force” to Ukraine as soon as hostilities cease. Members of the group of countries intending to support Kiev also appreciated US President Donald Trump’s commitment to providing security guarantees to Ukraine, in which the Coalition will play an important role through a multinational force supporting Ukraine, along with other measures.
