The document received 11 votes in favor. Russia and Bolivia voted against. China abstained. The mission's mandate expires on November 17.
On October 26, experts are due to submit to the Security Council a report on the investigation into the chemical incident in Khan-Sheikhun on April 4.
However, US Permanent Representative Nikki Haley said that the country intended to extend the mission even before the report was published.
However, Russia said it would decide whether to extend the mission only after the report was submitted. Moscow proposed postponing the vote on the resolution on November 7, but eight members of the Security Council, including the United States, voted against it and the proposal fell short of the required nine votes.
