Countries like Russia have high hopes for the melting of the Arctic ice, which, if it happens, could see the Northern Sea Route become an alternative to the Suez Canal, significantly reducing shipping costs from Europe to Asia and the Americas.
The Washington Post points out that experts' forecasts of global warming and melting ice in the Arctic, could become a "benefit" for Russia, and the Northern Sea Route is the country's exclusive economic zone.
Thus, Russia will have control over the strategic trade route, as well as profits for navigation and the operation of icebreakers, the newspaper added.
