Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit Beijing in September to attend ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of Japan's surrender to the Allies in World War II, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Putin could meet with US President Donald Trump there if the US leader decides to visit China at the same time.

“We are preparing for a trip to Beijing,” spokesman Peskov said. “This is indeed on the agenda of the head of state. But we have not heard that President Trump will also go to Beijing.”

“If it happens that he is also there, it cannot be ruled out that a question will be raised about whether it is reasonable to hold a meeting,” Mr. Peskov added.

The Times reported that the leaders of the three victorious nations – Russia, China and the US – could meet at the celebrations in China.

Earlier, Mr. Peskov told TASS that the Kremlin had no information about whether such a meeting was possible.

China will hold a series of events to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory, and Mr Putin has been invited. It is not yet clear whether Mr Trump will visit Beijing at the same time, but The Times said this was unlikely.
