The corresponding collective petition, which collected more than 90 signatures, was sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The document proposes to restore September 3 as a commemorative date, thereby restoring the validity of the Decree of the Supreme Presidium of the USSR from 1945.
It should be noted that until 1947, Victory Day over Japan was a holiday, and in subsequent years the authorities made it a working day, but still held a commemorative event. The holiday was eventually abolished after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and it was not included in the new law.
"Thus, the Russian people are illegally and unjustly deprived of the anniversary stained with the blood of our soldiers - the anniversary of the victory over Japanese militarism. If this continues, the day will come when our grandchildren will ask the question: What did the Soviet Union and the Soviet people have to do with the victory in World War II?" - as stated in the petition.
The authors of the initiative emphasize that the reintroduction of the Victory Day is meant to commemorate the victory over Japanese militarism, and is not at all directed against the Japanese people.
