"Russian airspace control systems over the neutral waters of the Black Sea detected two air targets approaching the border of the Russian Federation. To intercept these targets, Su-27 fighters of the air defense forces of the Southern Military District were sent into the air," the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The statement said the Russian fighter pilot identified the airborne objects as a US Air Force RC-135 strategic reconnaissance aircraft and a US Navy R-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft.
"After the US reconnaissance aircraft turned away from the border of the Russian Federation, the Russian fighter safely returned to the airfield... The US reconnaissance aircraft was not allowed to violate the border of the Russian Federation," the statement added.
The Ministry of Defense emphasized that the flight of the Russian fighter jet took place in strict compliance with international rules on the use of airspace.
