Independent naval researcher Alexandr Mozgovoi tells about the key features of these unique ships.
Project 22220 nuclear icebreakers will be the largest and most powerful ships in the world. Such ships will ensure Russia's leadership in the Arctic.
The length of these ships is 173.3 meters, width 34 meters, displacement 33.5 tons. The ships can lead convoys in Arctic conditions, pioneering the breaking of ice up to 3 meters thick.
All icebreakers of project 22220, in addition to the nuclear station, are equipped with electric propulsion systems. This significantly reduces operating costs and eases the work of the crew.
"The reactors operate not only on steam turbines, which rotate the propeller shafts, but also serve as power stations for the ship, including the engines. And this is what distinguishes the new ships from icebreakers of previous generations," said expert Aleksandr Mozgovoi, adding that the construction of such icebreakers is also profitable from an economic point of view.
As for the Russian icebreaker fleet in general, according to experts, no country in the world will be able to catch up with Russia in the near future.
"Russia owns the world's largest fleet of Arctic icebreakers, including nuclear ones, which no other country in the world has. And I think that in the near future no country will surpass Russia in this respect," - Mr. Alexandr Mozgovoi affirmed.
