Russia launches first Yasen-M multi-purpose submarine
On April 1, according to Interfax news agency, the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk launched the first multi-purpose nuclear attack submarine of Project 885M Yasen-M named Kazan.
This is the second submarine in the new generation Yasen/Yasen-M attack submarine line in the Russian Navy's plan to order 7 by 2020.
At the launching ceremony, Sevmash shipyard director Mikhail Budnichenko began the launching ceremony of the ship, then broke a bottle of champagne at the bow in accordance with tradition and the crew under the command of Captain 1st Rank Alexandr Beketov launched the ship into the water.
According to public information, apart from the first Yasen-class submarine K-560 Severodvinsk, all subsequent submarines were upgraded to the Yasen-M standard, including the recently launched Kazan.

Based on the shape and size of the propeller, the submarine's hydroacoustic signal can be calculated, so most strategic submarines hide the propeller system and power when launching.

The Yasen-M version differs mainly from the standard version in its modernized weapons and electronics, suitable for new combat methods. In addition, the new material structure also helps the Yasen-M version operate more quietly underwater.
Experts say that Russia's Yasen/Yasen-M class submarines are one of the world's leading attack submarines and currently have no worthy rivals in the US and the West. However, due to the completely new design and the lack of uniformity in the overall design, the cost of building the Yasen is quite high and the construction process is slow. At the current pace, it may not be until 2023 that the Russian Navy receives all 7 Yasen/Yasen-M submarines.
Designed as a multi-mission submarine capable of operating in the ocean, the nuclear submarine of the 855/855M Yasen project has a total displacement of 13,800 tons, a cruising speed of up to 30 nautical miles/hour and the ability to dive to a depth of 600m. With a crew of 90, including 32 officers, the Yasen-class submarine can operate continuously for 100 days at sea. The combat capability of this submarine class is 10 533mm torpedo tubes and vertical launch tubes equipped with Yakhont, Caliber and in the future Zircon missiles.
