Russia launches first Kilo-class submarine for Vietnam.
The first Kilo 636 diesel-electric submarine will be launched on August 28th. Following that, the submarine will undergo testing before being handed over to Vietnam.
Earlier, on August 14, RIA Novosti, citing a source in the defense industry complex, reported that the first Project 636 Kilo diesel-electric submarine in the contract to supply six submarines of the same type to Vietnam, built at the Admiralty shipyard in St. Petersburg, would be launched in August 2012.

"The first submarine under the contract will be launched in August 2012, after which it will begin a cycle of inspections and trials," the source said. The source added that the launch ceremony will be held on August 28th.
According to sources, this submarine will be delivered to the customer (Vietnam) before the end of 2012.
The plan to complete the contract for all six Kilo-class submarines will be finalized in 2016, the source added.
The Project 636 Kilo submarine has a displacement of 3,100 tons, a cruising speed of 20 knots, a diving depth of 300 meters, and is operated by 52 crew members. It is equipped with six 553 mm torpedo tubes, mines, and Club attack missiles.
