The Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk has launched the Borey-class submarine “Lord Pozharsky”. This is the last Project 955/955A submarine in the Russian Army’s plan to build eight submarines of this type by 2020.

The source also added that the submarine “Lord Pozharsky” is an upgraded version 955A (the 5th of its type). Accordingly, the submarine “Lord Pozharsky” has a total displacement of up to 24,000 tons and is equipped with 16 launch wells containing R-30 Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs).

The main differences between the upgraded Borey-A submarines are improved performance characteristics (stable deflation, magnetic exposure, etc.) and new generation on-board electronics. The differences between the Borey and Borey-A class submarines arose because the construction of this class of submarines took longer than expected and needed to be upgraded to cope with new threats.

It is known that the Russian Navy currently owns 3 Borey-class submarines: K-535 "Yuri Dolgoruky" (Northern Fleet) and K-550 "Alexander Nevsky", K-551 "Vladimir Monomakh" (Pacific Fleet). In addition, 4 Borey-A submarines: Prince Vladimir", "Prince Oleg", "Generalissimo Suvorov" and "The Emperor Alexander III" are in the process of completion and will soon be put into service.

With a total displacement of 24,000 tons, the Borey-class nuclear submarine is 170 meters long and has a hull diameter of 13.5 meters. The maximum speed of this submarine line is 29 knots and the cruise reserve is 90 days and nights. In addition to the Bulava ballistic missile, the Borey-class submarine is also equipped with 6 533 mm torpedo tubes.

The Bulava SLBM is designed as a strategic offensive weapon for Borey-class submarines. With a range of 8,000 km, this 3-stage solid-fuel ballistic missile can carry from 6 to 10 nuclear warheads. The destructive power of each Bulava warhead reaches 150 kilotons. The special feature is that the warheads equipped on the Bulava are all capable of self-guidance, changing flight trajectory to avoid interception and the missile launch process is carried out while the submarine is moving.

The Borey-class strategic submarine and the Bulava SLBM are part of Russia's current nuclear deterrent triad.
