AFP reported that on December 12, Russia criticized a conference of political and armed opposition groups held last week in Saudi Arabia, which ended with a statement urging Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down, saying the event did not fully represent the Syrian opposition.

“We cannot agree with the actions of certain groups gathered in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) to exclusively speak for the entire Syrian opposition,” the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed.

Moscow also noted that the conference did not include members of the “patriotic Syrian opposition” (considered to be pro-Assad), while the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) was also not represented at the conference due to organizers being under pressure from Türkiye.

Earlier on December 10 in Riyadh, representatives of political and armed factions in Syria agreed on a framework for negotiations with the Damascus government sought by world powers./.
