In a post on the official website of the Federation Council of Russia, Ms. Matviyenko wrote: “We plan to promote our initiative at the United Nations to recognize the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II as a world heritage of humanity.
In addition, we propose to recognize monuments to anti-fascist soldiers in all countries as world memorials of World War II.
We hope that this initiative will be approved as soon as possible. This is especially important in the year marking the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II and leading up to the 75th anniversary of the victory over fascism.”
Matviyenko raised the initiative at a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on June 6, saying that the Russian Federation Council would submit a request to the international organization.
“We must continue to cherish historical truth, passing it down from generation to generation in its entirety, without hiding or adding anything,” she said.
For his part, the UN Secretary-General expressed concern about the current rise of neo-fascist trends.
In Russia, June 22 - the day Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union and the country's 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War began - is chosen as a day of remembrance and mourning. The Great Patriotic War lasted 1,418 days.
A total of 27 million Soviet citizens were killed, including 18 million civilians and 8.7 million soldiers. 4 million were tortured and murdered in Nazi camps. About 4.5 million Red Army and officers were captured, and 2.5 million of them died in captivity.
