On October 4, Russia's TASS news agency quoted a senior Russian diplomat as saying that learning Ukrainian and other languages will not be banned, whether in the Donetsk and Lugansk republics or in the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions.

Specifically, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yevgeny Ivanov said: “The annexation treaties say that the official language is Russian, but learning other languages will not be prohibited.”

The diplomat affirmed that the new regions of Russia will choose the languages for teaching and learning.

Previously, according to TASS, from September 23 to September 27, the two republics in Donbass as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions held referendums, and the majority of voters chose to join Russia. On September 30, Russian President Vladimir Putin and the heads of the four regions signed treaties on joining Russia.

Also on the afternoon of October 4, at a plenary session, the Federation Council, the Russian Senate, unanimously passed four federal constitutional laws approving the Donetsk and Lugansk republics and the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions to join Russia.

The Russian ruble will become the sole currency used in the Donetsk and Lugansk republics and the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions from January 1, 2023, but the use of the Ukrainian hryvnia will remain allowed until the end of 2022./.
