Russia celebrates National Unity Day

This holiday originated from the victory of the Russian militia under the command of Kuzma Mimin and Dmitri Pozarski who liberated the Russian capital from the Polish invaders on November 4, 1612.

According to the Kremlin press release, today Russian President Vladimir Putin began the commemorative activities with a flower-laying ceremony at the monuments of Kozma Mimin and Dmitry Pozharski on Red Square, then visited the exhibition “Glory of Russia. My History” and awarded the Order of Friendship and the Order of Pushkin to foreign citizens for their great contributions to strengthening peace, friendship and cooperation between countries.
In particular, this year will be the first time the Russian President's Prize for contributions to strengthening the unity of the Russian peoples will be awarded. The first recipient of this award is the Honorary Chairman of the State Council of the Republic of Dagestan.
On this day, in the capital as well as in all provinces, large and small cities of the Russian Federation, many rallies, marches, cultural and artistic activities will take place to celebrate this historic event. In Moscow, 10 thousand people will participate in a large march called "Russia is One". In Saint-Peterburg, the homeland of the October Revolution, there will be a Festival of Lights reenacting the history of the formation of cities on the banks of the Neva River.
