Russia to chair UN Security Council in October

(Baonghean.vn) - According to Tass, Russia took over the leadership of the United Nations Security Council amid complicated developments in Syria and the important stage of preparing to elect a new Secretary General.

The first meeting under the chairmanship of Russia will take place on October 3. Immediately after that, Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations - Mr. Vitali Churk will hold an official press conference, announcing the framework of the Security Council's work program for October.

The Security Council's October agenda includes 20 meetings and debates.

On October 5, the 6th secret ballot will be held to elect the new Secretary-General of the United Nations. In this round, the opinions of the 5 permanent members (Russia, the UK, France, the US, China) will play a decisive role. The list of candidates for the position of Secretary-General currently has up to 10 people. Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antoni Guteress, who served as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, is holding the highest number of votes. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the current Secretary-General since 2007, will end his term on January 1, 2017.

Then, on October 19, there will be a quarterly discussion on the situation in the Middle East. On October 25, the focus of the discussion will be on the topic of “Women, the World and Security”. Security Council members must focus on resolving conflicts in Africa, especially the crises in Yemen, Lebanon and Syria. Russia will preside over the most important issues on October 28, revolving around the content of the United Nations' cooperation with regional organizations.

Also this month, there are expected to be at least two meetings on Syria, including the humanitarian situation and conflicts.

The members take over the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for one month in alphabetical order.

Previously, New Zealand held this position in September and after Russia, next November it will be Senegal.
