"We have agreed that the Russian Space Agency (Roscosmos) and the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will cooperate on a program to build a future space station," RT quoted Igor Komarov, head of Roscosmos, as saying at a press conference on March 28 in Kazakhstan.
Roscosmos and NASA will jointly agree on systems and standards for human-led space research programs. The new space station will be built after the ISS is decommissioned in 2024.
The next goal for the two agencies is a joint mission to Mars. "Our area of cooperation is the red planet. We are discussing the best way to utilize resources, finances, and establish a timeline, dividing the work to avoid duplication," said NASA administrator Charles Bolden. Roscosmos and NASA are currently conducting research together and collaborating with several other partners on a space exploration roadmap.
Bolden also emphasized that the US has not abandoned its goal of returning to the Moon. NASA plans to attract more private investors to its lunar and Mars exploration projects.
