(Baonghean.vn) - On December 28, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia does not clearly understand why the US decided to withdraw its troops from Syria, but raised the hypothesis that Washington could transfer responsibility in this conflict-ridden country to its allies.

Speaking at a press conference after talks with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi, Mr. Lavrov stated: "It seems that Washington wants to transfer responsibility to the partners in the coalition on the ground, as well as the military personnel from France, Britain and Germany who are illegally deployed in Syria, as well as the coalition's air force."

According to Mr. Lavrov, after withdrawing troops, Washington may also want its allies in the region to take on the heavy financial burden related to its mission in Syria. The head of the Russian foreign ministry said that the US statement needs to be confirmed by concrete steps, similar to Washington's repeated announcements of withdrawing troops from the al-Tanf area in southern Syria, but so far has not kept its promise.

Foreign Minister Lavrov added that Moscow hopes to receive an explanation from Washington through existing channels, and expects the US to confirm that the ultimate goal of all anti-terrorist actions in Syria is to restore sovereignty and territorial integrity to this Middle Eastern country.

On December 20, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the establishment of the Syrian constitutional committee has reached its final stage and the political settlement process in Syria could be launched next year.
