Russia believes that the current US policy towards Venezuela is "destructive".

At the request of the United States, the United Nations Security Council met on January 26 to discuss the situation in Venezuela. The United States advocated increasing pressure on countries in the Security Council to support opposition leader Juan Guaido, who has declared himself “interim president” of Venezuela, and called on President Nicolas Maduro to step down. Russia immediately reacted strongly to the US’s intention, asserting that the US policy towards Venezuela is “destructive”.

Speaking to the press on January 25, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he had appointed former US diplomat Elliott Abrams as special envoy for the process of "restoring democracy" in Venezuela after recognizing National Assembly President Juan Guaido as the "interim President" of this South American country.

Also on January 25, the US Treasury Department signaled its readiness to tighten economic sanctions on Venezuelan President Maduro's government, thereby accelerating the process of transferring government assets to opposition leader Guaido.

Russia immediately protested the US policy. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the US policy towards Venezuela “destructive”.

“We know the US policy and we also know the policy of those who pursue it. In fact, this policy towards Venezuela and a number of other countries is destructive. Everyone knows that the open calls for a coup are unacceptable and undermine the UN Charter and international norms of conduct. We will present our position at the extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Venezuela, if it is convened,” Lavrov said.

Meanwhile, the situation in Venezuela remains tense. For his part, President Maduro said his government will defeat the coup and oppose efforts to recognize the opposition leader as Venezuela's interim president.

However, he also announced his readiness to meet with opposition leader Guaido to begin a dialogue process to find a solution to the political crisis in this South American country. According to Mr. Maduro, the path of peace is the only solution to help the country overcome the current difficult time./
