Mr. Peskov said that Russia is ready to restore the above memorandum if Washington's "unpredictable actions" do not repeat.

He explained that the unpredictability of the US “means that the accusation of Syrian military involvement in a chemical attack was the pretext for the airstrike on Shairat air base in Syria on April 7.”

“This accusation is groundless, as no investigation has been conducted and there was not even an attempt to conduct such an investigation,” the Kremlin spokesman said.

Mr. Peskov said that the US did not provide any evidence of a chemical attack in Idlib province during the discussion between Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Mr Peskov stressed that Moscow had no intention of supporting any party involved in the attack in Idlib province, but that it rejected all unfounded accusations. He said Moscow had information from the military regarding the incident, but was in no hurry to believe it, instead calling for a thorough investigation.

“We have information that the military has. They have more infrastructure and presence in Syria than any other country,” the Kremlin spokesman said. “Russian military officials have their own opinion and they have spoken out. We are in no hurry to believe it. We say that a thorough investigation is needed.”

According to Mr. Peskov, Western partners claim that they have some information about the chemical attack in Idlib but they do not publish it.

On April 7, the US deployed 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles to the Syrian military base in the town of Ash Shairat near Homs province.

US President Donald Trump said the airstrike was in retaliation for the Damascus government's suspected chemical weapons attack on Idlib province earlier.

Russia called the US airstrike “a provocation against a sovereign state.” Moscow also announced the suspension of an agreement with the US to prevent air clashes in Syria./.
