Russia says US security strategy shows 'imperialist nature'

Referring to the new US security strategy announced by President Donald Trump yesterday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that this document "shows an imperial nature", "has no desire to abolish the unipolar world" and "rejects a multipolar world".

In the 68-page strategy, the White House describes "China and Russia challenge American power, influence, and interests, intending to erode American security and prosperity." The document also warns that "Russia wants to weaken American influence in the world, divide Washington from its allies and partners," and that Russian nuclear weapons are considered "the most significant existential threat to the United States."

Mr. Peskov said Russia could not agree with the US view of Moscow as a security threat. However, he still pointed out the positive points of the above strategy, such as the US's readiness to cooperate with Russia in areas that are beneficial to Washington.

"This position is fully consistent with our approach, which was announced by President Vladimir Putin, as Moscow is also looking for cooperation with the United States that is beneficial to us, and as long as our American partners are ready," Peskov said, citing the example of US-Russia cooperation on counterterrorism, which helped prevent attacks in St. Petersburg.

He said Russia would study the new US strategy, stressing that the document was large and “certainly needs careful consideration”, pointing to “quite impressive” but “unclear” statements.

The new national security strategy reflects President Trump's "America First" view and aims to return the country to the position of "unrivaled power" with four main pillars: protecting people and the country, promoting prosperity, protecting peace through strength and a strong military, and increasing US influence abroad.
