On Thursday, the press referred to social media reports about two Su-57s landing at Hmeymime, Syria. There was no official confirmation of this information.
Commenting on this announcement, Vladimir Gutenev, head of the Duma Committee on ensuring legal support for the development of Russian defense industry organizations, stated that the appearance of advanced Russian fighters in Syria will be a deterrent element "for aircraft of neighboring countries, which often fly over Syrian territory."
Meanwhile, Mr. Vasily Kashin, a leading researcher at the Institute of Far Eastern Studies (Russian Academy of Sciences), in an interview with National Interest, hypothesized that the main goal of the Su-57 aircraft in Syria was to test radar equipment in conditions close to real combat.
The Su-57 is Russia's fifth-generation jet fighter, which first flew in 2010.
