Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev signed the decree, describing the move as a response to Ukraine's anti-Russian sanctions. The decree names 322 individuals and 68 businesses, including President Petro Poroshenko's son and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. Earlier on October 24, the Russian government said that its new sanctions would not affect ordinary Ukrainians.
Since Crimea declared its independence from Ukraine and held a referendum to join Russia in 2014, Ukraine has imposed sanctions against more than 1,000 Russian individuals and nearly 500 entities. In addition, the Ukrainian government has banned Russian newspapers and television, and sanctioned Russian media and Internet companies.
In response to these steps, the Russian government said that Ukraine had taken “unfriendly” actions related to sanctions against Russian citizens and legal entities. According to Russia, these steps were necessary to protect national interests./.
