Saudi Arabian Prince Khalid bin Salman, who is also the Saudi ambassador to the US, has denied allegations that he called Khashoggi to lure him to Istanbul at the direction of Crown Prince Mohammed, leading to the journalist's death.

Earlier, the Washington Post, citing a source familiar with the matter, said that the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had examined a phone call between Khashoggi and Khalid, in which the Prince said the journalist should go to the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul to retrieve documents and ensure his safety. According to the Washington Post, the CIA believes that Khalid made the call at the direction of his brother, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and concluded that the Crown Prince ordered the journalist's murder based on the assessment that the Crown Prince was the de facto leader in Saudi Arabia. However, a CIA spokesman declined to comment on the Washington Post's revelations.
