Russia will halt the construction of Kilo-class non-nuclear submarines after completing the construction of six of these submarines for the Black Sea Fleet.

RIA Novosti quoted a senior representative in the Russian Navy as saying that Russia will stop building Project 636 Kilo-class submarines. The six submarines built for the Black Sea Fleet will be the final series.

By 2017, the Black Sea Fleet will receive six Project 636.3 Kilo-class submarines.

To replace the Kilo-class submarines, the Rubin Design Bureau is working on a new submarine project called Kalina. Previous reports indicated that construction of the fifth-generation Kalina non-nuclear submarine, equipped with an AIP system, would begin after 2020.

The Project 636 Varshavyanka submarine (NATO designation Kilo-class) was developed from the export version of the Project 877EKM submarine by the Rubin Design Bureau.

These are modern diesel-electric submarines, nicknamed "ocean black holes" due to their ability to operate quietly and be difficult for enemy sonar to detect.

The submarine is 74m long, 9.9m wide, has a submerged displacement of 3,950 tons, a maximum diving depth of 300m, a crew of 52, a maximum submerged speed of 25 knots, a range of 7,500 nautical miles, and a cruising endurance of 45 days.

The ship's armament includes six 533mm torpedo tubes with 18 torpedoes and Klub missiles.

The Kilo-class submarine is also Russia's most successful export model, with 10 exported to China, 6 to Vietnam, and Algeria currently having 2 and building 2 more.
